My newest geeky science obsession: aquaponics. This is a cool hybrid that combines plant growth with fish waste. Huh? Yep, you heard correct. The basic concept involves planting all sorts of tasty greens like basil in water, then adding fish and letting both parties go to town. Essentially the fish feed then create waste which fertilizes the plants growing in the aquaponics environment. The best part is that FarmedHere, a Chicago aquaponics company, is inside of a former warehouse within the city limits. The produce is sustainable and fresh and while the concept is not new this year, it's transforming city life: FarmedHere sells its fresh food in Whole Foods, Chicago, smack in the center of the city. In addition, aquaponics labs are popping up in high schools like Port High School in Port Washington, WI.
